Jesus used this exact example — a cup of cold water — when he talked about what counts. The people holding the slow sign in August heat are about as easy a chance to do that as you’ll drive past all week.
Carry Cold Water for the Hot Jobs
In the brutal months, keep a cooler of cold water and sports drinks in your car and hand them to the crossing guard, the road crew, the mail carrier, the roofers.
What you'll need
- A small cooler that lives in your trunk June through September
- Bottled water and a few sports drinks, actually cold
Pitfalls
- Keep restocking the ice. Warm water in a hot parking lot doesn't count for much.
- Hand it over with a sentence and leave — they're working.
- The same crossing guard every day beats a different stranger each time. Regulars get remembered; so do you.
Whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones will surely not lose their reward. — Matthew 10:42
