Everyone thanks first responders on the holidays. Almost nobody thinks of them on a random Tuesday at 11pm, which is usually when a hot dinner from a stranger means the most.
Feed the Night Shift
Drop dinner or good coffee at the fire station, the ER desk, or the 24-hour pharmacy after 9pm — the shifts that keep the city alive eat vending-machine dinners.
What you'll need
- A dozen tacos, a couple of pizzas, or a box of hot coffee
- A note: for the night shift, from a neighbor who sleeps because you don't
Pitfalls
- Call the non-emergency line or front desk first — some hospitals have rules about outside food, and stations appreciate the heads-up.
- Sealed and store-bought reads safer from a stranger than homemade. Save the casserole for people who know you.
- Drop and go. They're on shift; the note does the talking.
