“Can I talk to your manager?” is the scariest sentence in retail. Flipping it into praise gives an hourly worker something the job almost never does: getting named, by someone else, to the person who decides their schedule.
Ask for the Manager for a Good Reason
When someone serves you well, ask for their manager and praise the employee by name — then back it up with a review that names them again.
What you'll need
- Sixty seconds of mild social courage
- Their name, off the badge or asked directly
Pitfalls
- Name and specifics — "Marcus caught the mistake before I did" goes in his file; "great service" doesn't.
- Do it in the moment when possible; watching their employee get praised changes how a manager sees them.
- Reviews with an employee's name get read out at staff meetings and cited in raises. Two more minutes, real consequences.
Give to everyone what you owe them... if honor, then honor. — Romans 13:7
